Referring Your Client to M. Sue Wilson Law Offices, P.A.

If you are an attorney, we invite you to visit this section of our website to find out how we can help you with your clients and their family law related issues.

Your client’s appeal:

You have represented your client through trial, but neither you nor your client is satisfied with the result. Conversely, you and your client have obtained a good result from the trial court, but your client is subsequently served with a Notice of Appeal from the disgruntled opposing party. In either case, consider referring your client to M. Sue Wilson Law Offices, P.A. for representation in the appellate process. Sue and her associates have the experience and resources to inspect the record and identify appealable issues, to draft timely and persuasive briefs, and to present the case forcefully at oral argument.

M. Sue Wilson has handled more than 65 appeals in her 30-plus years of practice. It is common that she and her associates are handling several appeals at any given time. From her ground-breaking work in In re Guardianship of Kowalski, 478 N.W. 2d 790, and Baker v. Baker, 494 N.W.2d 282, to the more recent Redmond v. Redmond, 594 N.W. 2d 272, and Geske v. Marcolina, 642 N.W.2d 62, Sue has vigorously and creatively represented clients at the appellate level on a myriad of issues, including domestic abuse, interpretation and construction of antenuptial agreements, establishment and modification of familial support, third-party custody and access, and even the constitutional issues of prior restraint and due process.

Unless you regularly practice before the Minnesota Court of Appeals or Minnesota Supreme Court, it is all too easy to be blind sided by the sometimes esoteric procedural rules and niceties. You can be assured that your client’s chances on appeal, whether prosecuting or defending, will be enhanced by the experience and resources available to your client through M. Sue Wilson Law Offices, P.A..

If you are not a family law attorney:

It’s happened to almost all lawyers – you’ve earned the trust and respect of your client for representing them in, for example, their business acquisition or real estate transaction. Maybe your client has come to you for advice on a probate matter or for help in launching their own company.

Your client calls you in a panic, as perhaps the only lawyer they've ever had contact with. They've been served with a Summons and Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, or with a Petition for an Order for Protection or a Motion to Decrease Spousal Maintenance. Maybe your client is not married, but either they or their domestic partner are ending the relationship, with all the resultant issues of custody/parental access and support complicated by being outside of the traditional family law framework of Chapter 518.

Your client needs expert advice fast. The issues that arise in family law cover the gamut of his or her business and personal life, and your client’s first reactions can have far-reaching repercussions.

How will their ownership interest in business be valued and divided? What portion of the parties’ assets are non-marital, and how is the non-marital interest to be conserved? What is the effect of an antenuptial agreement? What is their exposure to having to pay spousal maintenance and child support, or conversely, what can they expect in the way of familial support from their spouse? How does the ever changing legislative landscape affect custody, visitation, support, maintenance? How are custody and access of the minor children determined outside of a traditional marriage? What about property issues and support?

Your client may also have more general questions that must be answered. What does the process of divorce look like? What can they expect in the way of timelines? When will they be divorced, and how will they and their spouse interact in the meantime? Who lives in the marital homestead and who will move out?

M. Sue Wilson, with more than 30 years experience in the practice of family law, has the expertise and resources to consult with your client and ensure that their questions, both immediate and general, are answered thoroughly and accurately. Sue’s experience ensures the highest level of representation both to protect your client’s interests and to fight for a fair result on the issues of custody, parental access, familial support, and equitable division of the marital estate.

If the custody/access issue or marital estate is complex, Sue’s familiarity with the financial and psychological experts in family law ensures that your client’s interests will be analyzed and presented to the opposing party and the Court in the most professional and persuasive manner possible.

You have earned your client’s trust and confidence; you can build that trust even further by referring them to M. Sue Wilson Law Offices, P.A. for analysis and representation of their family law issues, both at the appellate and trial level.
